It was the summer of 1974, when I was eight years old. I had just come in from playing baseball and walked into my bedroom to read my four chapters in the book of St. John. I decided I was going to read it as quickly as possible, so I could go back outside and play—I was not looking for any deep revelation. I laid down on my bed with my Children’s Living Bible propped up on my chest. As soon as my head hit the pillow it happened; the bed, my room, and even my body disappeared. It was sudden without any warning; my spirit left my body. I remember feeling energy, which I know now was the anointing of the presence of God. I felt myself being pulled through the roof of my house at a high rate of speed. I looked back and saw the roof of my house as I moved higher over the earth. I begin to see the oceans as if from a distance. I began going faster than the speed of light. You see, when you go faster than the speed of light, you enter the realm of the Spirit; you have to go faster than the speed of light.
I THOUGHT IT WAS THE RAPTURE!
I thought, it’s the rapture! Its happened! I look to my right and to my left, but I saw no one else. Then I thought, well, this couldn’t be the rapture, because I knew at least Grandma would be here if it were!
I didn’t know where I was going. I was floating somewhere in space, and I was traveling at a high rate of speed. I passed many things in the first heaven which is around the earth’s atmosphere.
I did not realize it at the time, but what I was experiencing is mentioned in the Bible. The apostle Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 12:2 of being “caught up to the third heaven.” Most Bible scholars agree that the earth’s natural atmosphere is the first heaven, and the second heaven is that unseen realm of the spirit — just as real as the natural world, but invisible unless God opens our eyes to see it. It is considered to be the place where Satan and his demons have lived since being cast out of the third Heaven. The third Heaven is where God dwells, and this is where I was going. Moving further through space, I began to see the lights of Heaven. It was so beautiful, and I felt so at peace, more than I could possibly describe.
In a matter of a few moments, I landed on a flat space no larger than the average living room floor and it was outside the biggest gate I ever saw in my life. It was very wide and tall. This gate was solid pearl all the way through. There wasn’t a cut or blemish in it. The edges of the gate, however, were carved with a design, but the rest was a glossy, glowing whiteness of righteousness. I shook myself to see if this was a dream. I decided it was real when my ears caught the words, “This is one of the gates.”
THEN I SAW JESUS!
I turned around to see who had spoken to me and there stood Jesus Christ in all of His glory! It’s one thing to see Jesus, but it’s a different thing altogether to see Jesus with all of His glory! I recognized Him immediately although He looked like none of the pictures I had ever seen painted of Him. When you are faced with the presence of Jesus, you have no doubt who He is.
Many people have asked me what Jesus looks like. I remember that He appeared to be 5 feet, 11 inches to 6 feet tall with sandy brown hair; not too long and not too short but right at His shoulders. His skin was olive-toned, and He had a beard. Whatever you picture as a perfect man, that’s what Jesus is. He’s perfect in everything—the way He looks, talks, moves—everything. That’s the way I remember Him. He is God and I sensed that.
As He approached me, all of the glory that was about Him begin to move toward me, and it came upon me. It was a complete feeling, wonderful, like nothing I have ever experienced. I buckled to my knees. Tears began to stream down my face; I couldn’t have stopped them. They were not caused by my human emotions. I was not crying because I was happy or sad or afraid, it was simply what happens when you experience God’s glory. The glory of God will make you cry in His presence. Every time Jesus speaks, it’s as if arrows of faith propelled by love hit you and explode on the inside of you. It will bring you to tears.
Jesus said, “Now stop the tears. It’s time to go through Heaven. I want to give you a tour through Heaven because I love you so much.” Remember, God is no respecter of persons. He loves you as much as He loves me. There is no difference in His eyes between you and me.
The tears began to pour down my face again. He said, “There’s no need of tears, but a face full of joy would make me glad.” Then He laughed, and I joined him. Jesus came over to me and pick me up. He wiped away my tears.
I looked more intently at the things that surrounded me. The beauty of that place astonished me. We don’t have the vocabulary on earth to describe it.
Then Jesus escorted me to the gate. He did not ask anyone to open it, He did not push a button. The gate just listed upward, and we walked through.
